Yew 'pebbles' top rounded hedges in Hatfield House garden
A fabulously sculptural clipped yew (Taxus baccata) hedge surrounding the formal West Garden at Hatfield House. The rounded blocks of yew at the four corners are topped with pebble-like flattened spheres.
The extensive gardens at Hatfield House were begun by Robert Cecil (and his plant-hunter John Tradescant) in the early 17th century. The gardens were significantly restored and expanded in Victorian times.
