A pergola walk with intriguing grapevine shadows
An intriguing graphic pattern of shadows cast on the ground by the pergola timbers and the emerging foliage of the grape vine which they support.
This extensive pergola forms a square walk in the formal West Gardens at Hatfield House. The strategically-placed seats face the house.
The extensive gardens at Hatfield House were begun by Robert Cecil (and his plant-hunter John Tradescant) in the early 17th century. The gardens were significantly restored and expanded in Victorian times.
