View along Rivers Haven & Witham from the tower of Boston Stump
A view out along the River Haven and River Witham, from the high-level walkway around the tower of St.Botulph's church ('Boston Stump'). The view north towards Lincoln includes the Sluice Bridge and the adjacent railway bridge. At 272 feet, the Medieval tower is one of tallest in England, visible for miles across the flat surrounding fenland. Only 33 feet from the River Haven, the tower has never required any addition support thanks to the remarkable skill of the original Medieval builders. Externally, the tower is capped with a decorative stone octagonal lantern fringed with pinnacles, each sporting a golden wind vane (please see my other images in this gallery). Lights were once lit in the lantern to guide ships at sea in The Wash.
